Students’ Passiveness in Speaking English: The Culprit behind the Silence in the Classroom

This study focused on the pre-service students’ passiveness in classroom. Despite their chosen profession where speaking English language is a requirement, they are not interactive classroom when used as medium of communication. The objective this to identify causes and strategies employ overcome it. data for were collected using questionnaire distributed through Google Forms. respondents’ answers further validated small group discussions. findings indicate following: Technical factors: respondents moderately agree that insufficient sentence organization inaccurate pronunciation contribute classroom; Psychological strongly internal factors such nervousness, lack confidence, fear making mistakes lead passiveness. They also peer pressure contributing factor; Environmental motivation, or thereof, influences frequency availability practice opportunities impact level Regarding classroom, follows: heavily rely translation answering questions, while use it organizing ideas writing responses; frequently hand gestures facial expressions convey ideas; extensively movies, reading books, watching classes social media platforms develop skills; commonly engage self-talk conversations with peers, rarely English-speaking individuals provide comments during class
